House of God becomes House for Dogs
Categories: TJ's Take

Sunday is funday for this pup. And I think it’s a sin to wake up before 4 p.m. on what should be a day of rest.

But I had to check out the new doggy church service at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Now I’m far from being a pious mutt but I wanted to find out why a pooch would want to be in the pews.

Tango told me she hopes to find her God to help her through cancer. This golden-hued cutie recently had surgery for breast cancer but still has some cancer cells left.

Her mom Dolly Ling brought Tango to Covenant to find another form of healing for her fur baby.  dog church

“I want to do everything I can in every area to avoid another surgery,” Ling said.

Tango sat solemnly on Ling’s lap as the Rev. Tom Eggebeen prayed for Tango and other parishioners, both canine and human. Rev. Eggebeen also spoke of eternal hope, which I guess is something Tango needed to hear.

Rev. Eggebean made sure everyone, including those of different faiths and different breeds, felt included in the service.

“God is the creator of all living creatures: Great Danes and Maltese, tall people and short people, dogs with long fur and those with no fur, blondes and brunettes…” Rev. Eggebeen said.

We also heard a song that mentioned amen and bow wow in the same lyric.  dog church 2

Dogs shared nose taps and bark out louds before the sermon started. But when Rev. Eggebeen started speaking, most of the pooches perched silently on their owners’ laps. Others rested on dog beds placed next to folding chairs. Rev. Eggebeen didn’t flinch at the occasional woof.

I constantly eyed the dish of treats that were handed out when parishioners made contributions to the church. Thankfully the humans were generous with them.

Some new muzzles and faces showed up because of the new service. Jennifer Dennis had not attended church for a long time but decided to visit Covenant because she could bring Gretchen, a long-haired Dachshund.

Leslie Evans said her daughter Patty started going to church again when she learned she could bring M.E., a Cocker Spaniel/Lab mix.

Whoa. If we can convince the humans to turn to religion I wonder what else we can do?

For  Southland peeps who might be interested, Covenant Presbyterian Church is on West 80th Street off Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester. The half-hour services are at 5 p.m. on Sundays.
